Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs: a missing component

Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs

misses a component highlighted by Ali Nesin (personal communication): responsibility. He formulates the triad

Safety – Independence – Responsibility

as the guiding principles of his work with children and teenagers at Nesin Vakfi  and the Nesin Mathematics Village.

  1. I don’t know the work of Maslow, beyond the pyramid diagram and a perusal of his Wikipedia article; but I imagine responsibility might fall under the need for esteem. The word “esteem” is related to “estimate”; and to have a responsibility—a duty—is to be estimated as being capable of performing the duty.
