Frankly, I cannot remember any mathematical achievements by Alcuin of York (735 – 804), Bede the Venerable (c. 673-735) or Boethius, Anicus (480 – 524), just to begin with A and B 😉

Bede the Venerable, judging by Wikipedia, knew how to compute date of Easter, which, at his time in Europe, was quite an achievement.
Re Gelfand – this is strange, indeed.
