It may interest you to know that most university departments of computer science, both in Britain and elsewhere, are not happy with the school curricula in computing and related subjects. (The school curricula are usually focused on using applications rather than on understanding concepts or theory.) In some cases, universities have started offering their own advanced program in CS to high-school students, so that the best school students may experience some intellectual challenge in computing while still at school, and possibly even earn university credits for the courses they take. For instance, here is an article about the University of New South Wales, in Sydney:

I don’t know yet of any British university doing this, but I know some are considering it.
