Amusing confusion about units. Sure y = 3f. Assume l (small L) is length in yards and L (capital) is the same length in feet (so the larger letter is assumed to be bigger number:-). Then, l * y = L * f, that is l * 3f = L * f. F cancels out happily producing L = 3l.
