From a circular e-mail of a colleague forced to attend a compulsory “New Academic Programme”:
As someone who has recently started this programme, my main comment is that it is very unclear what is expected of a member of staff who is trying to complete the programme. I.e. what courses one has to do and the associated timelines, etc. This is even more frustrating when one of the main issues they discussed (at great length) on the recent teaching day I attended was that one should always clearly define the course to students and define what is expected of them.
It is a general observation, “teaching development” courses forced on academics by Staff Development Departments of British universities very frequently do not meet basic criteria of quality of teaching described in that very courses.
