Who doesn’t know Emmy Noether? Who? She was surely the target of much injustice, but the NYTimes just loves to see “oppression” everywhere.
Tarski, perhaps the greatest logician of the 20th Century after Gödel, could not find a professorship when he lived in Poland. Only in exile in the U.S., at the age of 45, did he find one at Berkeley. Before WWII, before the “massification” of higher education, professorships were not easy to find (especially for women and Jews).
