Donald Knuth and his notation for multiplicative inverses

Please help me to find a reference to Donald Knuth‘s suggestion to denote inverses as x^- rather than x^{-1}. I remember Knuth commenting somewhere that ^1 is redundant because  x^{-1} could be easily understood as (x^-)^1.
