From a colleague:
It is perhaps interesting to note that the government institution I have most to do with, the Met Office, is returning to ‘traditional values’ with regard to its recruitment policy: it is looking for good people with first or 2.1s in Maths or closely related science. A BSc in Meteorology will not get someone an interview! Tracking volcanic ash is a stringent test of numerical simulation!
Probably the need arose to think, calculate and assess, and not just to find a suitable EU Aviation Authority directive and quote it for the press release?
